Coronavirus Fun: Learn How to Pop Your Own Popcorn

March 15, 2020

This video has been shared on YouTube over 111,000 times since 2012. It’s my most shared video, and no wonder. Families have gone so far off the beaten, proven path of regular popcorn making that they have forgotten how to do it in the first place.

This video has been shared on YouTube over 111,000 times (so far). It’s my most shared video, and no wonder. Families have gone so far off the beaten, proven path of regular popcorn making that they have forgotten how to do it in the first place.

It’s quite liberating: no more microwave popcorn, air popper, or specialized kitchen appliance. Our family’s favorite snack comes from good, old fashioned stove top popcorn.

I encourage you to pull the family together and enjoy an evening of stove top popcorn. I suspect you’ll never go back to the complicated mess of the conventional methods. Enjoy!

Serves 6 little kids

  • Peanut oil
  • 1 cup popcorn
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Seasoning to taste

Pour about 1/8″ peanut oil into kitchen kettle. Place on high heat. Pour popcorn into pan. Allow oil to heat until one kernel pops. Pour the sugar over the popcorn and cover.

Allow popcorn to pop. When about half the kernels are popped, turn heat to low. Popcorn will be finished when there is about 2 seconds between pops. Remove from heat. Shake the kettle and pour into bowl.

Melt butter and pour over popcorn. Shake bowl till evenly coated. Season with your favorite seasoning. Besides traditional table salt, here are some other ideas: ranch dressing mix, taco seasoning mix, Lawry’s seasoning mix, and macoroni and cheese seasoning.
