The Most Memorable Images of the Joint Session

I hope these two pictures sear into our memories

Two images impacted me last night. The first was of the widow of William Ryan Owens, special operative who gave his life for his country last month in an unfortunate attack in Yemen. Carryn looking to heaven in tears is seared into my mind and heart:

The Washington Examiner explains the emotion of the moment:

Carryn Owens, who was sitting next to Ivanka Trump and other guests on the balcony of the House chamber, fought back back tears, exhaled, looked above and mouthed “I love you, baby.” Tears streaming down her face as the applause continued, Carryn Owens eventually stood up, clasped her hands in apparent prayer, raised her head again and mouthed “I love you.”

President Trump made sure his widow understood Owens’ sacrifice by claiming, “Ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemy. Ryan’s legacy is etched into eternity.”

This is how conservatives feel, and this is what soldiers believe. They are serving their country by facing an enemy head-on. Owen’s ultimate sacrifice is to protect America and serve our nation’s interests, and everyone should give ultimate honor to their ultimate sacrifice.

Everyone. No matter what party or political affiliation.

But another picture is seared into my head: the Democratic leadership sitting on their hands at this widow’s applause. It is being argued as perhaps the longest applause in recorded history on the House Floor. But the opposition party couldn’t pull themselves to give honor to William Ryan Owens and his suffering widow:

Even the Supreme Court Justices were standing. And they never stand.

Nothing but shame can be said of this. Nothing but shame.
